The Rathcroghan area is traditionally associated with cattle and in particular beef production, this remains the bedrock of the Rathcroghan farming economy to the present day. In fact, 80% of the farmers engaged in the Farming Rathcroghan project stock cattle, either as pure beef system or in mixed beef and sheep production systems. The farms in the area are relatively small, the average farm size is below 30 hectares, and many of the farms are fragmented. About two thirds of the project farmers have recorded archaeological monuments or features on their land, and about 60% have swallow holes and/or streams.
